The image of Prussia in the Czech medieval sources
KOCOUREK, Josef
The aim of this dissertation is an attempt to reconstruct an image of Prussia based on the Bohemian middle-age sources. The time horizon of the dissertation is between 10th and 15th century, the period ranging from the first contact between the two regions embodied by the first missionary journey of St. Adalbert to conflicts between Teutonic Orderand Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, which took place in Prussia. The structure of the dissertations is relatively complex. The first chapter is focused on the general history of Prussia until the arrival of the Teutonic Order. The following chapter deals with the general history of the order. This chapter is divided into two parts: - The first subsection deals with the general history of the Teutonic Order from its inception until 1525 - The second subsection describes the history of law in Bohemia The following chapter titled?Prussian-Bohemian relations in the 10th to 15th century?contains a list of contacts, which took place between the kingdom of Bohemia and Prussia. Every important contact is set in the political context of the time. The image of Prussia from Bohemian prospective is analyzed in the main part of this disseartion using Czech medieval sources. This chapter is also divided into two parts: - The first subsection is devoted to image of the Prussian tribal population between10th to 14thcentury, - The second subsection then analyzes the image of the Teutonic Knights in Bohemia in the years 1204-1466. Both parts aim to interpret images, be it images of tribal people or of the Teutonic Knights, in the given period and to reflect on the possible developments during the specified period. The conclusion is devoted to the main questions of the dissertation as well as to their answers. First, how were tribal Prussians reflected in Bohemian sources? Did the image of tribal Prussians change over time? If so, how did their image change or develop based on the new findings? How were the Teutonic Knights reflected in the Bohemian medieval sources, since their arrival in the Bohemian kingdom until the end of the so-called ?thirteen-year war.? How and why did the image of orders develop and change during this period?
